I have written a version of this post three times and thrown two of them away, because the first two were about the wardrobe I wished I wore. This one is about the twelve things I reach for on an ordinary Wednesday, which is a far less photogenic subject and a much more useful one.
What Actually Works
- Two fabrics, repeated: washed linen for warm months, lambswool for cold ones.
- One colour story — bone, oat, clay, a single dark neutral to ground it.
- Everything must work with the same two pairs of shoes, or it does not come home.
- If it needs an occasion, it is not part of the capsule. It is a costume.
Why linen keeps winning
Linen creases the moment you look at it and I have made a kind of peace with that. It softens instead of wearing out, it takes dye in a way that never looks flat, and after roughly forty washes it becomes the single most comfortable thing in the drawer. Wool does the same trick in the other direction — stiff and slightly formal in October, entirely yours by February.

The Uniform
One shirt, worn four ways
Open over a vest in August, buttoned under a knit in November, belted as a very casual dress in between. Bought in 2021, mended once at the left cuff, and still the hardest-working thing I own.

The folding is part of it
A wardrobe this small only works if you can see all of it at once. Everything is folded rather than hung, in three stacks by weight, and the whole thing lives on two shelves. It takes about four minutes on a Sunday and it is, embarrassingly, one of my favourite four minutes of the week.

A small wardrobe is not a restriction. It is simply a decision made once instead of every single morning.
