Linen, light and the art of doing less

There is a particular kind of quiet that lives in the first hour of the day. I have spent years trying to protect it, and these are the small habits that finally made it stick.

I keep a notebook for exactly this kind of thing. Most pages are half-finished lists and arrows pointing at nothing, but every so often a page turns into a little essay — and then, eventually, into a post like this one.

Where it started

It began, as most good things do, by accident. A friend needed help, a client cancelled, a roll of film came back from the lab with one frame I could not stop looking at. I said yes to the small thing, and the small thing quietly rearranged the rest.

The quietest choices are usually the ones people remember.

From my notebook

I do not believe in rules so much as in a few gentle defaults — the things you reach for when you are tired, rushed or unsure. These are mine at the moment:

  • Fewer, better things — and permission to repeat them.
  • Natural light first, always.
  • One detail that feels like you, every single day.
  • Ten unhurried minutes before anyone needs anything from you.

What I would tell you

Start smaller than you think. Notice what you keep coming back to, and let that be enough for a while. The rest has a way of finding its place once the centre is clear.

If you try any of this, write to me — I read every letter, and the best ideas in this journal came from someone else’s inbox.
